An epic drama about Nichiren’s life. Nichiren was a Buddhist monk who lived for 60 years during the Kamakura period (1185-1333) in Japan. Nichiren taught devotion to the Lotus Sutra as the exclusive means to attain enlightenment. Because of his devout belief, Nichiren is met with opposition throught his travels, with life on the line, can Nichiren accomplish his goal?
Beautiful film score. Can be watched for the music and scenery alone! Nicherin was also a very important figure in the Kamakura period (the first shogunate period) and in spreading a form of Buddhism not focused on the pure-land-sect/afterlife element particular to Japanese practice (though he didn’t free them of praying to various Boddisatvas in a kami-worship-like fashion). So, watching Nakamura (a.k.a., Yorozuya) Kinosuke play this very charismatic, dramatic yet stoically-withdrawn role is a pleasure.
